Bob Baker Day Meets Union Station

Metro Art Presents is collaborating with the world-renowned puppetry organization, Bob Baker Marionette Theater, to celebrate Bob Baker Day with Bob Baker Day Meets Union Station. We’ve teamed up to create a virtual celebration starring the Theater’s original and much beloved puppets performing throughout historic Union Station. No matter your age, you will be delighted by the magical puppet performances that highlight the many ways to get around Los Angeles!

The show premieres on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 10:30 a.m. on Metro’s Facebook, Metro Art’s Facebook and and Union Station’s YouTube channel.

Marionettes will unicycle, roller skate, wagon, ride a ball, dance, welcome visitors and generally have a grand time exploring the historic station— alongside some of their classic puppet numbers— during this online carnival of inspiration and creativity, both born from and inspired by Los Angeles and the Theater founder himself.

Fittingly, in a 2005 interview, Bob Baker once said, “I remember riding the Red Car over the city as a kid…I love the current light rail system and take the subway whenever I can. I like to people watch.”

And there’s more!

Union Station is just the launching point for the reimagined 7th Annual Bob Baker Day journey. Following the premiere, viewers can delve deeper and access exciting performances at distinctive locations across Los Angeles County via an interactive 3D map at BobBakerDay.com. The site will feature contributions from dozens of community partners including Kidspace Children’s Museum, Columbia Memorial Space Center, and the Natural History Museum, plus a robust roster of music, activities and puppet performances filmed at iconic destinations throughout L.A. This digital exploration of Bob Baker’s Los Angeles will be viewable for one week only, from Feb. 27 through March 7.

Bob Baker Day is held annually to commemorate the birthday of the theater’s founder and namesake, Bob Baker, whose handmade marionettes have entertained countless generations of Angelenos since 1963. The theater was originally located on 1st Street near the streetcar tunnel into Bunker Hill.

Check out some of the behind-the-scenes photos below for a preview of what’s to come and be sure to save the date for the premiere on Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. on Metro and Union Station social channels!
